When you or a loved one head out on your bicycle, the last thing you should have to worry about is a negligent driver causing a crash. Unfortunately, we know that bicycle accidents do happen. Today, we want to discuss a recent bicycle crash that could claim the life of the victim.

What happened in this case?

A bike crash that happened on Sept. 9 is likely to take the life of a 73-year-old woman. Police say the incident happened at around 1:35 p.m. on South Broad Street/Route 501. The woman was on her bicycle heading west on East Second Avenue when she tried to cross Broad Street to get to West Second Avenue. A vehicle driven by a 38-year-old man was traveling in the opposite direction turned left to go north on Broad Street when he struck the bicyclist.

Police are still investigating this incident. They say that the traffic light was green at the time of the crash, but they will be looking into whether the driver should have yielded the right-of-way to the bicyclist.

Police say that the woman is not expected to survive her injuries.

These incidents can be devastating

We know that nearly every bicycle accident leads to an injury or a fatality. A passenger vehicle that weighs thousands of pounds can inflict serious damage to a bike rider. During the latest reporting year in Pennsylvania, the Department of Transportation says there were 1,127 bicycle crash injuries and 21 bicycle crash fatalities.

The injuries from these incidents are often severe. It is not uncommon for our bicycle accident attorneys to see the following:

  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Internal organ damage/internal bleeding
  • Broken or dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations or amputations
  • Severe disfigurement
  • Other injuries that cause disability

In many cases, bicycle crashes occur because of the negligence of a vehicle driver. This can include them:

  • Driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs
  • Driving while distracted
  • Failing to yield the right-of-way
  • Failing to obey stoplights or stop sights
