Construction Worker Deaths Rising In NYC

On behalf of Soloff & Zervanos, P.C. Posted in Construction Accident on Friday, May 3, 2019.

If you live in and around the city, then you know that construction never seems to stop. It is always in the background as we continue to grow and adapt. If you or a loved one work in construction, then you know just how dangerous the job can be. We are now learning that construction injuries and deaths are on the rise in NYC.
You can count on the knowledgeable and experienced team at Soloff & Zervanos, P.C. to be by your side when you need a construction accident attorney. We will work to secure the compensation you need for all of your injury-related expenses.

These Incidents Are Increasing

In the past year, 16 construction workers have died in the city. Construction has more work-related deaths than any other industry in NYC according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“The past several years have been very busy, very robust construction market, but there shouldn’t be anywhere near this many fatalities, say Gary Labarbera, the NYC Building and Construction Trades Council president.

While it is typically the fatalities that get the most attention, we know that thousands more are injured in the city each year due to construction incidents. These injuries can range in severity, but often include:

  • Spinal Cord Injuries
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries
  • Broken or Dislocated Bones
  • Hearing and Vision Loss
  • Respiratory Problems
  • Severe lacerations or amputations

The article we mentioned above makes a few good points about why these incidents are increasing in the city. Christine Azzoli says that “It’s always been a dangerous profession, but deadline and pressures…causes you to take risks. If you’re given the time and proper equipment you have a better chance of working safely.”

  • Workers need the necessary time and the proper equipment.

“Some contractors willing to underbid the job, take it lower and they look to cut corners everywhere they can and the first thing is to hire cheap labor,” says bricklayer Jerry Gozdyra.

  • Using inexperienced laborers can lead to unnecessary injuries and fatalities.

The message is clear that construction accidents and fatalities are usually preventable. That is why OSHA safety inspectors in the city are in overdrive, working to ensure that everyone is complying with the rules and regulations necessary to keep every construction worker safe.
